12 Things to Do in Cappadocia After Your Balloon Ride
It is 8:00 AM. You are back at your hotel with a champagne glow, a flight certificate in your hand, and a camera full of sunrise photos. The balloon was everything you hoped for. Now what? You have an entire day stretching ahead of you in one of the most fascinating landscapes on Earth, and the energy from that morning flight has you ready to explore.
Cappadocia has far more to offer than what you saw from the basket. Here are 12 things we recommend to our guests for the rest of the day, organized from easy walks to full-day adventures.
1. Hike Rose Valley and Red Valley
The best hike in Cappadocia, and the perfect follow-up to a balloon flight. You just saw these rose- and copper-colored rock formations from above; now walk among them. The trail connects Goreme to Cavusin through narrow canyons, past hidden cave churches with faded frescoes, and along vineyard-lined paths. The full walk takes 2–3 hours. Start from the Rose Valley entrance near Goreme and finish at Cavusin, then take a taxi back (EUR 5–8) or walk the road.
2. Visit the Goreme Open Air Museum
A 15-minute walk from central Goreme, this UNESCO World Heritage site holds rock-carved churches and monasteries from the early Christian period. The frescoes inside the Dark Church (Karanlik Kilise) are among the best-preserved in all of Turkey. Go before 10:00 AM to avoid tour groups. Allow 1.5–2 hours. Entry is about EUR 15, plus a few euros extra for the Dark Church.
3. Explore Derinkuyu Underground City
From the sky to deep below ground—Derinkuyu descends 8 levels and 55 meters beneath the earth's surface. Early Christians carved this complex to shelter from invaders, and it could hold 20,000 people. You will see living quarters, kitchens, a church, wine presses, and ventilation shafts that still function. The tunnels are narrow (as low as 1.5 meters in spots), so skip this if tight spaces bother you. Kaymakli is an alternative with wider passages. Derinkuyu is 30 km south of Goreme (40-minute drive). Entry about EUR 15.
4. Climb Uchisar Castle
The highest natural point in Cappadocia. The castle is a massive rock formation honeycombed with tunnels and rooms, rising above the town of Uchisar. Climb to the top for a 360-degree panorama of the entire region—you can spot the valley your balloon flew over. The climb takes about 15 minutes. Best at sunset, when the light turns the fairy chimneys golden. Entry roughly EUR 5.
5. Take a Pottery Workshop in Avanos
Avanos has been producing ceramics since the Hittites, using distinctive red clay from the Kizilirmak River (the longest river in Turkey). Several workshops let you try the pottery wheel yourself under a local artisan's guidance. Sessions run 30–60 minutes and cost EUR 10–20. You can fire and glaze your piece to take home. Chez Galip and Venessa Seramik are two established workshops. Avanos is 10 minutes by car from Goreme.
6. Walk Through Love Valley
One of the valleys you likely flew over that morning. The towering fairy chimneys here are Cappadocia's most photographed formations. The trail starts from the viewpoint above Goreme and descends into the valley floor through vineyard paths and orchard groves. A 45-minute out-and-back walk gives you the highlights. Go in the late afternoon when the light is softer and the shadows are longer.
7. Taste Local Wine
Cappadocia's volcanic soil grows excellent grapes, and winemaking here dates back thousands of years. Turasan Winery in Urgup is the oldest and largest, with vineyard tours and tastings from about EUR 5. Try the local varieties: Emir (a crisp white) and Kalecik Karasi (a light, fruity red). Several restaurants in Goreme also offer wine flights featuring regional producers. After a sunrise at 500 meters, a glass of local wine in a cave restaurant feels like a proper celebration.
8. ATV or Horseback Ride Through the Valleys
See the landscape at speed on an ATV (quad bike) tour, or explore at a slower pace on horseback—fitting, since Cappadocia means “Land of Beautiful Horses” in ancient Persian. ATV tours typically run 1–2 hours and cost EUR 30–50, passing through Sword Valley, Love Valley, and Rose Valley. Horseback tours range from 1 hour to half-day rides through quieter trails that vehicles cannot access. Both are available with sunset options.
9. Visit Pasabag and Devrent Valley
Two sites, close together, north of Goreme. Pasabag (Monks Valley) has the tallest multi-headed fairy chimneys in the region, with hermit cells carved high into the rock. Walk among them on easy, flat trails—30 minutes is enough. Devrent (Imagination Valley) has formations that resemble animals: the famous “camel rock,” a dolphin, and a Napoleon hat. A 20-minute stop for photos. Both sites are free.
10. Watch Sunset from a Panoramic Viewpoint
Cappadocia's sunsets rival the sunrises. Three top spots: Uchisar Castle (highest vantage point), the Rose Valley sunset viewpoint (the rock formations turn deep orange), and the Love Valley panoramic terrace above Goreme. Each offers a different perspective. Several rooftop restaurants and hotel terraces also serve drinks during sunset hour—ask your hotel for their recommendation.
11. Book a Turkish Bath (Hamam)
After a 4:30 AM wake-up and a day of hiking, a traditional hamam is exactly what your muscles need. Several hamams in Goreme and Urgup offer the full experience: steam room, hot stone (gobek tasi), scrub, and foam massage. Sessions last about 45–60 minutes and cost EUR 25–40. Esentepe Hamam in Goreme is a popular choice carved into natural rock.
12. Eat a Testi Kebab Dinner
End the day with Cappadocia's signature dish. Testi kebab is lamb or chicken slow-cooked with tomatoes, peppers, and onions inside a sealed clay pot. The waiter brings the sealed pot to your table and cracks it open with a knife—part meal, part ceremony. Pair it with a Turasan wine and fresh pide (Turkish flatbread). Most restaurants in Goreme serve it for EUR 12–18. The combination of a sunrise balloon flight and a testi kebab dinner makes a complete Cappadocia day.
How to Fit It All In
You cannot do all 12 in one day. Here is how we suggest combining them:
- Half-day after flight: Goreme Open Air Museum + Pigeon Valley walk (activities 2 + 4)
- Full-day active: Rose Valley hike + Derinkuyu + sunset from Uchisar (activities 1 + 3 + 10)
- Full-day relaxed: Love Valley walk + pottery in Avanos + wine tasting + hamam (activities 6 + 5 + 7 + 11)
- Adventure day: ATV tour + Pasabag/Devrent + testi kebab dinner (activities 8 + 9 + 12)
