Cappadocia Balloon Tipping Guide: How Much to Tip Your Pilot and Crew
In Turkey, tipping is a gesture of appreciation, not an obligation—and that applies to balloon flights too. But when you have just watched the sun rise over the fairy chimneys from 300 meters up, and a crew member hands you a glass of champagne with a genuine smile, it feels right to say thank you with more than words. Here is how tipping works for Cappadocia balloon flights, based on local customs and what we see every morning at the landing field.
How Much Should You Tip?
EUR 5–10 per person is a kind and appreciated amount for the ground crew. That said, there is no fixed rule and no one will look at you sideways if you do not tip at all. Tips are never included in the flight price and never expected.
| Who | Suggested Tip | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ground crew (3–5 people) | EUR 5–10 per person | They inflate the balloon at 4 AM, chase the landing, and pack everything up |
| Pilot | Not expected | Pilots are salaried professionals; a thank-you or kind review means more |
| Transfer driver | EUR 2–5 total | Optional; a small gesture for the 4 AM wake-up call |
Who Actually Gets the Tip?
Most passengers assume the pilot is the person to tip. The pilot is important, of course—they are CAA-licensed professionals with years of experience. But pilots earn a professional salary. The ground crew, on the other hand, are the ones who arrive at the field before anyone else, physically hold the balloon during inflation, drive the chase vehicle to the landing spot, and fold the entire envelope back into the trailer. Their work is physically demanding and starts well before sunrise.
If you want your tip to go where it matters most, hand it to the crew chief at the landing site, right after the champagne celebration. They will share it with the team.
When and How to Tip
The best moment is just after landing, during the champagne toast. The crew is gathered, the mood is high, and it feels natural. Hand cash directly to the crew chief or place it in the tip jar if one is available. Turkish lira, euros, or US dollars all work—the crew is used to all three currencies.
One thing we notice: passengers on our Private flights tend to tip more generously, partly because the crew works exclusively for their basket. But a Standard or Comfort flight crew works just as hard. The amount matters less than the gesture.
What If You Do Not Want to Tip?
That is completely fine. Tipping is not part of the flight price and carries no social pressure at the landing field. If you prefer to show appreciation differently, leaving a detailed review on Google or TripAdvisor mentioning the crew by name is genuinely valuable—it helps them professionally and costs nothing.
FAQ
Is tipping included in the flight price?
No. Our flight prices cover hotel transfer, breakfast, the flight, champagne, and a flight certificate. Tips are separate and voluntary.
Can I tip with a credit card?
Tips are cash only at the landing field. If you do not have small bills, picking up a few Turkish lira at any ATM in Göreme the evening before works perfectly. For more practical advice about your flight morning, see our 21 tips for first-time flyers.
Do other passengers tip?
From what we see, roughly half of passengers tip. It varies by culture, group size, and personal preference. There is zero awkwardness either way.
