Will My Balloon Fly Today? Cappadocia Weather Requirements

The flight decision is made between 4:00 and 5:00 AM on the morning of your flight. Turkish civil aviation authority SHGM meteorologists assess wind speed, visibility, precipitation, and cloud ceiling. If any factor falls outside the safe range, all balloon flights in Cappadocia are grounded for that morning.

Weather Conditions Required for Flight

Who Makes the Decision?

The SHGM (Turkish Directorate General of Civil Aviation) sends a pilot balloon (a small weather balloon) into the atmosphere early each morning. Based on the data, they issue a “fly” or “no-fly” decision. Individual operators cannot override this—it applies to all 25+ licensed companies in Cappadocia simultaneously. How Will I Know If My Flight Is Cancelled?

We notify you by phone, SMS, or WhatsApp between 4:30 and 5:00 AM. If cancelled, you can sleep in. We will rebook you to the next available morning at no extra cost. If you do not have additional mornings in Cappadocia, you receive a full refund. See our cancellation & refund policy.

Cancellation Rates by Month

Summer months (June–September) have less than 10% cancellation rates. Shoulder months (April, May, October, November) range from 10–30%. Winter (December–March) can reach 40–50%. For detailed month-by-month data, read our cancellation rates guide.

Tips to Maximise Your Chances

  • Plan multiple mornings. If you have 3 mornings in Cappadocia, the chance of at least one flyable morning is over 95% even in winter.
  • Book for your first morning. If it flies, great. If not, you have backup days and automatic rebooking.
  • Check the forecast. While the official decision is made at 4 AM, you can get a general idea from weather apps the night before. Clear skies and calm winds are good signs.
  • Read our what to do if cancelled guide for alternative activities on grounded mornings.

Can Balloons Fly in Rain or Snow?

No. Any precipitation grounds all flights. Rain makes the balloon envelope heavy and unpredictable. Snow reduces visibility and creates ice on the envelope fabric. Light cloud cover is fine as long as the ceiling is above 1000 metres and winds are calm. Check best time to visit for seasonal weather patterns.
