Goreme Sunrise Balloon Viewpoint Guide

Goreme is the epicentre of Cappadocia’s balloon flights. Most balloons launch from the valleys surrounding this small town, which means you can watch the entire spectacle without leaving the village. Here are the best viewpoints within walking distance.

Lover’s Hill (Asiklar Tepesi)

The most popular viewpoint in Goreme and arguably in all of Cappadocia. A 10-minute uphill walk from the town centre brings you to a hilltop with a full 360-degree panorama. Balloons rise from the valleys below and drift past you at eye level. The fairy chimneys of Goreme spread out beneath your feet.

  • Access: Follow the signs from the mosque in Goreme centre. The path is unpaved but walkable in trainers.
  • Arrival time: 20–30 minutes before sunrise. In peak season (July–August), arrive 40 minutes early to get a front-row spot.
  • Crowds: This is the most visited viewpoint. Expect 30–100 people on busy mornings.

Goreme Panorama Point (Near Bus Station)

A flat, easily accessible viewpoint on the eastern edge of town near the otogar (bus station). No climbing required—ideal for families, elderly visitors, or anyone who prefers flat ground. The view faces east toward the sunrise with fairy chimneys in the foreground.

  • Access: 5-minute flat walk from Goreme centre toward the bus station.
  • Best for: Families, wheelchair users, photographers who want a stable tripod surface.
  • Crowds: Less busy than Lover’s Hill.

Rose Valley Rim (15-Minute Drive)

Technically outside Goreme, but only a 15-minute drive. The Red/Rose Valley rim trail puts you at the same altitude as the balloons. They drift past at eye level or below you. The red rock formations create a stunning colour contrast with the golden sunrise light and colourful balloon envelopes.

Your Hotel Terrace

Many Goreme cave hotels have rooftop terraces specifically designed for balloon watching. The advantage: you can watch in comfort with tea or coffee without the pre-dawn walk. When booking accommodation, ask if the terrace faces east and whether it has an unobstructed sky view.

Photography Tips

  • A 70–200mm telephoto lens compresses the balloons into dramatic stacks against the fairy chimneys.
  • Include a human element (a person watching, a tea glass) for scale and storytelling.
  • Shoot both horizontal and vertical—vertical works better for social media.
  • For detailed camera settings, read our golden hour photography guide.

When Do Balloons Fly?

Balloons launch at sunrise, which varies by season: around 5:15 AM in June and 7:15 AM in December. The flight lasts about 60 minutes. Check with your hotel the night before to confirm if flights are expected—weather can ground all balloons. See our weather requirements guide and other watching spots across the region.

See It from Inside the Balloon

The view from 900 metres is even better. Sunrise flights from EUR 175 per person.
