Kayseri & Nevsehir Airport to Cappadocia Balloon: Transfer Guide

You step off the plane in Kayseri and immediately check your phone. The confirmation message from us is already there: “Pick-up confirmed for tomorrow at 4:45 AM.” But between the airport exit and your cave hotel in Goreme, there is a 75-minute drive across the Anatolian plateau. How you cover that distance—and when you arrive—matters more than most travelers realize, especially when a sunrise balloon flight is on the schedule.

Two airports serve the Cappadocia region. Both work well, but they have different characteristics. Here is everything you need to know to get from the terminal to your hotel—and from your hotel to the balloon basket.

Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR) vs Nevsehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV)

Our recommendation: If flight times are similar, choose Kayseri for more schedule options and better car rental availability. Choose Nevsehir for a shorter drive (half the distance). Both airports have shuttle services that sync with every flight arrival.

Transfer Option 1: Shared Shuttle

Shuttle companies operate minibuses that meet every arriving flight at both airports. You do not need to pre-book for most services—look for the shuttle desks in the arrivals hall. However, pre-booking guarantees a seat, especially during peak summer months.

  • Cost: EUR 10–15 per person from Kayseri, EUR 10–12 from Nevsehir
  • Duration: 70–80 min from Kayseri (includes multiple hotel drops), 35–45 min from Nevsehir
  • Drop-off: Direct to your hotel entrance in Goreme, Uchisar, Urgup, or other towns
  • Payment: Cash (TRY, EUR, or USD) or card at most shuttle desks

The shared shuttle is the most affordable option and works well for solo travelers and couples. The trade-off is time—the van stops at multiple hotels, so you may add 15–20 minutes compared to a direct drive.

Transfer Option 2: Private Transfer

A private car or minivan takes you directly from the airport to your hotel with no other stops. Most cave hotels can arrange this for you when you book your room. You can also book through transfer services online.

  • Cost: EUR 40–60 per car from Kayseri, EUR 30–45 from Nevsehir (not per person)
  • Duration: 60–70 min from Kayseri, 30–35 min from Nevsehir (direct, no stops)
  • Best for: Families, groups of 3+, late-night arrivals, travelers with heavy luggage

For groups of 3 or more, a private transfer often costs less per person than individual shuttle tickets. It also guarantees the fastest route to your hotel, which matters if you are arriving late and need to sleep before a 4:30 AM balloon pick-up.

Transfer Option 3: Rental Car

A rental car gives you maximum flexibility for exploring the wider Cappadocia region—Ihlara Valley, Soganli, and villages that public transport does not reach easily. Kayseri airport has desks for Avis, Budget, Sixt, and local companies. Nevsehir has fewer options.

  • Cost: EUR 25–50 per day depending on vehicle and season
  • Fuel: The drive from Kayseri to Goreme uses about EUR 8–10 of fuel
  • Parking: Most hotels in Goreme have free parking. Uchisar and Urgup hotels usually have parking too, though some older cave hotels in narrow streets may require street parking
  • Road quality: The main highway is well-maintained and well-signed. GPS works reliably

One important note: you do not need a car for the balloon flight itself. We handle all transport from hotel to launch field and back. A rental car is purely for your daytime exploration.

When Should You Arrive?

This is the most critical planning detail for balloon travelers. Your balloon flight launches at sunrise. Hotel pick-up happens about 60–80 minutes before sunrise, depending on your hotel location. That means:

  • Arrive the day before your flight. An afternoon or evening arrival gives you time to check in, eat dinner, and get a few hours of sleep before the early pick-up.
  • Do not plan to fly the same morning you land. Even if your plane arrives at 7 AM, your balloon launches earlier than that in every season.
  • Late-night arrivals work fine. If your flight lands at 10 or 11 PM, the 70-minute transfer still gets you to Goreme by midnight. That leaves 4–5 hours of sleep before a summer pick-up. Not ideal, but many guests do it.
  • Same-day arrival for an afternoon of sightseeing. Land in the morning, explore Goreme Open Air Museum and local sights, then sleep early for the next morning’s balloon flight.

Departure Day: Getting Back to the Airport

After your balloon flight and hotel breakfast, you have the rest of the day before your departure flight. Most travelers fill the gap with a valley hike or underground city visit. For activity ideas, see our 12 things to do after your balloon ride.

For the return journey, the same shuttle companies and private transfer services operate from Goreme to both airports. Allow 90 minutes for Kayseri and 50 minutes for Nevsehir, including a buffer for traffic and check-in. Hotels can arrange your return transfer when you check in.

Connecting from Istanbul

Most international travelers reach Cappadocia via Istanbul. The domestic flight takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. Turkish Airlines and Pegasus fly from both Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gokcen (SAW). One-way fares range from EUR 30–80.

A popular schedule: morning flight Istanbul to Kayseri, afternoon sightseeing in Cappadocia, balloon flight the next sunrise, then afternoon flight back. For a complete routing guide, see our Istanbul to Cappadocia guide.
