Champagne Celebration After Landing: What to Expect
The moment your basket touches down, the celebration begins. Your pilot pops a bottle of sparkling wine, pours glasses for everyone, and raises a toast to a safe flight. It is one of the most photographed moments of the entire Cappadocia balloon experience—fairy chimneys behind you, deflating balloon above, and a glass in your hand.
Why Champagne After a Balloon Flight?
The tradition dates back to 18th-century France. Early balloonists carried champagne to offer to farmers whose fields they landed in—a peace offering to calm anyone startled by a giant balloon dropping from the sky. The custom stuck, and today every reputable balloon operator worldwide continues it.
What Exactly Happens?
- The basket lands and the ground crew secures the balloon.
- Your pilot invites everyone to stay in or step out of the basket.
- Sparkling wine is poured into glasses (or plastic flutes, depending on the operator).
- The pilot gives a short toast—usually something about the weather gods being kind.
- You receive your flight certificate and take group photos.
- The crew drives you back to your hotel or the meeting point.
Can I Skip the Alcohol?
Absolutely. Non-alcoholic alternatives (juice or water) are always available. Nobody will notice or care. The toast is about the shared experience, not the drink.
Photo Tips for the Celebration
Keep your phone ready as the balloon deflates behind you—it makes a dramatic backdrop. Ask a crew member to take a group photo. The light at this point (about 30 minutes after sunrise) is still soft and golden. Check our photo position guide for more tips.
Is Champagne Included in the Price?
Yes. All our flight packages—Standard, Comfort, and Private—include the champagne toast, flight certificate, and hotel transfer. There is nothing extra to pay. See what’s included for the full breakdown.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is real champagne served or sparkling wine?
Most operators serve quality sparkling wine. If you prefer a specific brand—Moet, Veuve Clicquot, or another label—you can request a luxury champagne upgrade when booking your Comfort or Private flight.
How long does the champagne celebration last?
The post-landing celebration takes about 10–15 minutes. The pilot pours glasses, gives a short toast, hands out flight certificates, and the crew takes group photos. You are back at your hotel by around 8:00–8:30 AM.
Can I request a non-alcoholic toast for religious or personal reasons?
Of course. Juice and water are always available alongside the sparkling wine. Simply let us know your preference at booking or tell your pilot before the flight. No explanation is needed and no one will ask.
