Cappadocia Balloon Drone Rules & Regulations
A passenger on a recent flight told us his drone was confiscated at the launch field that morning. He had flown it near the inflation area, a police officer walked over, and the drone was seized on the spot. No warning, no negotiation. He spent two days at the local police station filing paperwork to get it back—and paid a fine of TRY 18,000 (roughly EUR 500).
Drone rules in Cappadocia are strict, and they are enforced. Here is what you need to know before you pack your drone.
Can You Fly a Drone in Cappadocia?
Yes, but with significant restrictions. Turkey’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (SHGM) regulates all drone flights nationwide. In Cappadocia specifically, balloon flight zones are restricted airspace during morning flight hours (roughly 04:00–08:00). Flying a drone during this window in or near the Goreme area is illegal without special authorization.
The Rules at a Glance
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Registration required | All drones over 500g must be registered with SHGM before flying in Turkey. |
| No-fly zone during balloon hours | Goreme and surrounding valleys are restricted airspace from ~04:00 to ~08:00 when balloons are active. |
| Altitude limit | 120 meters (400 feet) maximum altitude for recreational drones. |
| No flying near balloons | Minimum 3 km horizontal distance from balloon launch and landing areas during operations. |
| National park restrictions | Goreme National Park (UNESCO site) requires separate permission from the park authority. |
| Penalties | Fines up to TRY 18,000+. Drone confiscation. Possible criminal charges for endangering aircraft. |
Can You Bring a Drone into the Balloon Basket?
No. We do not allow drones in the basket, and no licensed operator in Cappadocia does. A drone propeller near balloon envelope fabric is a serious safety risk. The nylon material can be punctured, and rotor wash near the burner creates unpredictable airflow. This rule is non-negotiable.
When Can You Legally Fly a Drone in Cappadocia?
Outside balloon operating hours (after ~08:00 and before ~04:00 the next morning), drone flying is possible in areas that are not otherwise restricted. Practical windows:
- After 09:00 AM: Balloons have landed and airspace restrictions lift. This is your safest window.
- Sunset hours (5:00–7:00 PM): Beautiful light, no balloon traffic, and lower wind than midday. The best time for drone photography in Cappadocia.
- Outside Goreme: Areas like Ihlara Valley, Derinkuyu, and more remote valleys have fewer restrictions, though SHGM registration still applies.
How to Register Your Drone in Turkey
Foreign visitors can register drones through the SHGM online portal (iha.shgm.gov.tr). You will need your passport details, drone serial number, and proof of insurance. The process takes 1–3 business days, so apply before arriving in Turkey.
Alternatives to Drone Footage
The aerial perspective you want from a drone? You get it from the balloon itself. A Private flight gives you 60–90 minutes at 300–900 meters altitude with unobstructed views in every direction—exactly the footage a drone would capture, but from a legal and far more immersive vantage point. Our Comfort and Private tiers include professional photo and video, delivered digitally after your flight.
