Cappadocia Balloon Drone Rules & Aerial Photography

Short answer: drones are not allowed during Cappadocia balloon flights. The Turkish civil aviation authority (SHGM) bans drone operation in the balloon flight zone during active flying hours. This is a hard rule with real enforcement.

The Rules in Detail

  • Drone flights are prohibited in the Cappadocia balloon zone from approximately 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM (the active flight window).
  • The restricted zone covers Goreme, Uchisar, Urgup, and surrounding valleys—essentially the entire area where balloons operate.
  • Penalties include confiscation of the drone, fines up to 50,000 TL, and potential criminal charges for endangering aircraft.
  • Even outside the flight window, drone use in Cappadocia requires a permit from the local governorship (kaymakamlik) due to the area’s status as a national park.

Why the Ban Exists

Up to 150 balloons fly simultaneously each morning. A single drone collision could puncture a balloon envelope, endanger passengers, or cause a forced landing. The balloons have no ability to manoeuvre away from a drone—they follow the wind. Read more about balloon safety regulations.

How to Get Aerial-Style Shots Without a Drone

The good news: you are literally flying in the sky. The balloon basket gives you an aerial platform at 300–900 metres. Here is how to make the most of it:

  • Lean over the edge: Hold your phone or camera over the basket rim for a straight-down perspective. Use a wrist strap.
  • GoPro on a selfie stick: Extend it beyond the basket for wide POV shots that look like drone footage. See our GoPro guide.
  • Ultrawide lens: A 16mm or wider lens captures the balloon, basket, and landscape in one frame—a shot no drone can replicate.
  • Timelapse from the basket: Set your phone on the basket edge (stabilised) and record a 60-second timelapse of the world rotating below you.

Can I Fly a Drone After Balloon Hours?

Technically possible but still restricted. You need a permit from the Nevsehir governorship, and Goreme National Park has its own restrictions on aerial devices. Even with a permit, you cannot fly over crowds, roads, or historic sites. Most content creators find it easier to shoot from elevated ground viewpoints or from the balloon itself.

Camera Settings for In-Basket Aerial Shots

For the best results shooting downward from the basket, check our camera settings guide. Quick tips: use shutter priority at 1/500s or faster to avoid motion blur, and shoot in RAW for maximum flexibility in post.

Your Balloon Is the Best Camera Platform

Forget the drone. Fly at 900 metres with your camera in hand. Flights from EUR 175 per person.
